Railroad Retirement Benefits
Railroad workers are covered by the federal Railroad Retirement Act, under which compensation is subject to railroad retirement taxes in lieu of a Social Security deduction. Railroad retirement payroll taxes are slightly higher than Social Security, however, they earn higher retirement benefits compared to social security and, under some circumstances, can retire earlier with full benefits.
